Kingsbridge Healthcare Group are currently seeking to fill the role of Ophthalmology Nurse within the Ophthalmology Department. The successful candidate will be based at Kingsbridge Private Hospital Sligo.

Job Summary

To provide excellent nursing care, and to actively participate in and contribute to the management of the Ophthalmology Department. To provide the highest standard of care to to pre & post operative Ophthalmology patients.
To provide high standards of communication when dealing with Ophthalmology patients in the outpatient Department .
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Principle Duties and Responsibilities
Professional/Clinical
  • To ensure the provision of a high standard of nursing care to patients attending the Hospital, working within agreed policies and procedures.
  • Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care, utilizing research findings as appropriate.
  • To provide leadership for the Nursing team to ensure a high and safe standard of patient care providing supervision and support where appropriate.
  • Setting, monitoring, and maintaining excellent standards of nursing care in conjunction with the Ophthalmology team.
  • Maintaining personal contact with patients, relatives, and carers, being sensitive to their needs for courtesy, dignity and privacy and always ensuring a friendly environment.
  • Maintaining timely and accurate nursing records and ensuring that confidentiality is respected
  • Storing, checking and administering drugs accordance with NMBI standards.
  • To work with minimal supervision in The Ophthalmology department must be willing to provide effective education to ophthalmic patients and relatives.
  • Communicating with and assisting the multidisciplinary team to promote excellence in the delivery of patient care.
  • To prioritise own workload and that of other staff ensuring that the Unit is managed effectively.
  • To contribute to the local resolution, investigation and follow up action of any informal or formal complaints.
  • Adhere to polices and procedures in place.
2. Organisational
  • Co-ordinating the admission of patients.
  • Ensuring the safe discharge of all patients from the Ophthalmology department.
  • Communicating and co-operating with other departments.
  • Providing accurate information as required in relation to pre and post operative care, and particularly the notification of incidents and accidents to staff, patients and visitors.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean environment within the clinical area in accordance with the Trust Health and Safety, Clinical Risk and Infection Control policies.
  • Assist in the effective and efficient running of lists, collating accurate information about patients and notifying the Ward Manager and relevant Medical Teams of list changes and patient progress.
  • To take appropriate action to manage unexpected situations and changes, informing the relevant Manager as necessary.
  • To be familiar with and use the computerised system integral to the running of the service.
  • To contribute to Clinical Governance, achieving and maintaining the goals and the philosophy of the Hospital.
3. Education and Training
  • To be responsible for providing patients and carers with up-to-date information regarding pre and post op Ophthalmology Care.
  • To attend relevant meetings, always communicating effectively and reporting back to the team.
  • To identify own training needs and attend relevant study days/courses as agreed with the line manager.
  • To participate in the development of appropriate strategies to meet new national and local objectives e.g. clinical governance and risk management .

Qualifications
Essential
  • NMBI registration
Desirable
  • Previous experience in Ophthalmology nursing.
Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in nursing.
  • Qualification in Ophthalmology Nursing.
Essential
  • Previous experience in outpatient managing a large group of patients within the clinic.
  • Special Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care according to individual needs.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize workload and patient care needs.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of managing resource.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of clinical risk.
  • Have a special interest in Ophthalmology Nursing.
  • Have basic computer Skills have an interest in developing skills assisting with OCT imaging, Visual fields testing and performing Ascan biometry.
  • Must be interested in undertaking training in Visual fields and biometry.
Desirable
  • Knowledge and experience in OCT imaging, Visual fields testing, Visual activity testing,
  • Using tonometer and Biometry measurements.
  • Can demonstrate knowledge of evidence based ophthalmic practice.
  • Can discuss recent NICE guidelines, National initiatives and policies regarding management of ophthalmology conditions.
